Ori-suta October 11 edition

Celebrating their seventh anniversary as a group, NEWS have returned to Tokyo Dome for the first time in one year and eight months.

The highlight of this concert tour had to be the gigantic balloons attached to the six gondolas which carried each member high enough to scrape the ceiling of the dome.  To make sure the group members wouldn’t get scared, there were no practice runs using the gondolas so it truly was a make-or-break situation on their first day.  Once safely back on ground, the members showed they were even more excited about the gondolas than the crowd.

Highlights from the NEWS press conference held before the first Tokyo concert (September 25)

Q: It’s been a while since your last Tokyo Dome concert

Yamashita: There’s been a year-and-eight-month gap but Osaka (concerts at Kyocera Dome) was really fun so we’re looking forward to the Tokyo shows.

Nishikido: It was excitement we hadn’t experienced for a while.

Koyama: I was happy to see the smiles on faces in the crowd, but I was also happy to be able to get together as a group because during that gap the six of us didn’t have many jobs together.  It’s made me realise it’s so much fun when all of us are in one place.

Q: Has anything changed?

Kato: I think we’ve all matured.  When I was watching videos from our concert one-year-and-eight-months ago, Koyama had his hair dyed.  Now he looks like this so (laughs).

Yamashita: It looks good.

Koyama: Yamapi’s opinion is really positive.

Yamashita: You look like a proper young man.

Kato: It’s like you’ve finally got your feet on the ground now.

Q: So is the material for this concert more mature?

Koyama: I think so.  We didn’t have any heated arguments while we were drawing up plans.  In the past Masuda would’ve let out an annoyed “hmph” if he didn’t get his way (laughs).  We’ve become a lot calmer.

Yamashita: But we haven’t forgotten what it’s like to be a kid.

Q: We’ve heard that Masuda-kun was in charge of the costume designs this time?

Masuda: Yes.  I didn’t let out an annoyed “hmph” here though (laughs).  With the outfits we’re wearing now, the highlight is the spangled camoflauge patterns.  We’ve had spangled outfits in the past, but this is different in that it’s a spangled pattern.

Q: The fake fur looks cool too.  It must be perfect with the cold weather we’ve had lately.

Masuda: Everyone said it looked cool and extravagent, but the weather was still really hot in Osaka so when I saw everyone’s face covered in sweat I couldn’t help but feel sorry (laughs).

Nishikido: But for some reason, I’m the only one without a fake fur scarf.  When I asked him where mine was he said there wasn’t one to begin with.

Masuda: They’ve been designed to be unique for every member.

Q: Any other highlights?

Masuda: The NEWS Air Gondolas, maybe?  NEWS flies.

Kato: We get into gondolas attached to giant balloons and become Carl Fredricksen (from Disney PIXAR’s 2009 film “Up”).  I think we fly up to the third or fourth floor.

Yamashita: Hopefully we can get really close to the crowds up there.  “Fun” is our keyword for this tour so we’ve got a whole lot of songs lined up that will hopefully be a lot of fun for us and the fans.

Kato: That’s why we’re performing all of our singles, and we’ve got a “Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter” theme so the stage sets are aligned with those seasons.

Q: Speaking of singles, you have a new song coming out in November.

Koyama: November 3rd is Ryo-chan’s (Nishikido) birthday, but we’re also releasing “Fighting Man” that day!  It’s a really uptempo song, and we’ll be singing it for the first time after this.

Q: In terms of fighting men, we’ve heard that Yamashita-san has been training hard lately?

Yamashita: I did boxing training for my next movie “Ashita no Jo”.  It opens in February so please come and see it!

Q: Will we see your buffed up body today?

Yamashita: No, I don’t plan to take off my shirt today (laughs).  I’ll leave that up to the movie.

Q: Koyama-san, you have a stage show coming up too.

Koyama: I’ll be acting in a play called “0-goshitsu no Kyaku ~Kaettekita Otoko~” from November.  In dramas I play characters who don’t fight, but on stage I do fight.  Generally, everyone in NEWS fights.

Q: Tegoshi-kun, you haven’t spoken at all yet, but are you fighting too?

Yamashita: He’s fighting with himself right now!

Koyama: He’s wondering when he can start talking.

Tegoshi: I plan to fight in the concert.  I’ll KO myself and win.

Kato: Random (laughs).

Q: And Nishikido-kun?

Nishikido: Me?  I haven’t been fighting (laughs).

Q: So, has anything changed in your private lives since the last time you were together as a group?

Masuda: Shige (Kato) wears a lot of grey clothes from head to toe these days.  He used to wear brighter clothes so it’s like he’s calmed down.

Kato: I just graduated from university so I thought I’d become more like an adult.

Q: Any news about love?

Koyama: Love?  I’d like to put more effort into finding love but it’s pretty difficult.  Right now I’d rather put all of my effort into the concert.

Yamashita: I’m in love with my fans.

Masuda: I’m in love with the 55,000 fans who are here today too!
