Thousands of fans erupted in screams as SMAP’s Takuya Kimura (37) turned up to the “SPACE BATTLESHIP ヤマト (Yamato)” movie countdown event in Tokyo on November 28, reports Mainichi Shinbum Digital and Oricon yesterday.

As Kimura stepped out of his limousine and onto the red carpet, 8500 people greeted him in huge screams.

“I wish the next three days (until the opening) could fly by right now.  I got so excited while I was watching it myself that I just can’t wait until all of you have seen it too,” Kimura said.

The movie is a live action film of the 1970s anime “宇宙戦艦ヤマト (Uchyu Senkan Yamato)”.  Set in the year 2194, Earth comes under radioactive seige from unknown aliens, the Gamilas, who wipe out more than half of the human population.  Five years later, the surviving humans are hiding underground, but the Earth Defense Forces lead by former ace pilot Susumu Kodai (Kimura), set out for the planet Iscandar to find a device that can save Earth from the radioactive contamination that is threatening the last human survivors.

Another special guest at the event included the anime’s theme song singer Isao Sasaki, who performed the ending song to the anime series.  Later on, Sasaki had talked about how he was surprised how happy Kimura was when he had sung the song at a staff party recently.

“I had no idea that the Sasaki-san himself would sing at the staff party and, even though I was drunk, I made sure I stood up straight and watched him perform, ” Kimura said.

The popstar also said he was thankful to the film’s director, Takashi Yamazaki, for giving him the chance to be involved and talked about a little boy he had seen at a previous event.

“Seeing that boy crying and saying ‘I want to go on Yamato’ made me realize how amazing it was to have done this, and I think I was able to pass on the excitement I had felt as a kid to him.  I am so thankful to (Yamazaki) director for giving me this chance to go on Yamato,” he said.

Coming to the event, Kimura said it was his first time seeing the large 15 metre model of Yamato, 1/14th of the actual size, which had been set up for the event.

“It looks so real, but the Yamato in the movie looks even more amazing,” he said.

The Yamato model will stay on display at Akasaka Sacas until December 4.
