Not only will TOKIO’s Taichi Kokubun (36) be the second star from Johnny’s history to run a full marathon, he has promised to run the 42 kilometres in under four hours, it was revealed on January 8, reports Sankei Sports (source 1 & 2).

Kokubun will run the 2011 Tokyo Marathon on February 27 as part of his work for Fuji TV’s sports show “すぽると! (Suporuto!)” and it has been reported he said he was excited about his upcoming challenge.

“It’s like a dream that my first marathon is the internationally well-known Tokyo marathon.

“Not only do I want to enjoy it, but I also want to get a result,” he said.

It has been reported Kokubun had been approached with the idea around last November.  Even though the star had no experience with long distance running, he had said he enjoyed sports in general and has been an avid Futsal player.

“I saw no reason to turn it down.  I thought being able to experience a physically-demanding sport would be a good chance to learn something as the show’s reporter,” he said.

Kokubun has been training under a professional coach, and has been running three times a week in order to reach his 100 kilometre total goal every month.  He has also been putting time into cardio training and has said although he has started the feel the strain his body will undergo during the run, he is growing confident about being able to finish the run.

Being part of a top-selling band has meant the star has had to come up with creative ways to get enough training.  Currently his band TOKIO hosts two regular TV shows and are regulars in 10 other TV or radio shows.  The band is also preparing for their national concert which is due to start in March.  It has been reported that Kokubun has been using every opportunity he gets in between jobs to train, and has been asking drivers to drop him off part of the way home after work so he can jog home.

“It would be so lame to say I couldn’t do it because I was busy,” he said.

The only other Johnny’s talent who has run a full marathon is Masahiko Kondo (46) who run a marathon in 2009.  TOKIO’s Tatsuya Yamaguchi (38) and V6’s Go Morita (31) are other talents who had run similar races, taking up the 100 km charity runner role in Nihon TV’s “24 hour TV” special in 1997 and 1998 respectively.

It has been reported Yamaguchi had advised Kokubun to “make sure you run at your own pace”.
