Kusanagi and Takeuchi talk curry at movie event

Laughter echoed through the cinema as SMAP’s Tsuyoshi Kusanagi (36) and actress Yuko Takeuchi (30) answered questions at their film’s premiere event in Tokyo on January 15, reports Daily Sports and Mainichi Shimbun Digital.

“僕と妻の1778の物語 (Boku to Tsuma no 1778 no Monogatari)” is a film based on a real-life story where a writer decides to write a short story for his terminally-ill wife every day to cheer her up.

When Kusanagi had been asked what he himself could do in the same situation, his confident answer caused his co-star erupt in laughter.

“If I loved my wife, I’d make her curry every day,” he said.

It has been reported the cinema’s crowd, who had just shed tears from watching the movie, reacted with confused looks before breaking out in laughter.  But the pop star’s comment was thrown into doubt by his co-star’s response.

“You can’t get better with curry every day.  Mind you, if you leave it overnight, curry tends to taste better on the second day,” she said.

“But then I wouldn’t be making every day…,” Kusanagi said.

At the event, the two actors were also asked to write a Kanji symbol which they had thought represented the movie.

Kusanagi responded with “生”, the symbol for “life”.

“The theme of this movie is how people live.  No matter what kind of challenges people face, I hope they can become a little more optimistic about living after watching this movie,” he said.

Takeuchi chose “夢”, the symbol for “dream”.

“It was the best medicine Saku-chan (the writer) gave Setsuko (his wife),” she said.
