Arashi’s Sho Sakurai will transform into a sharp-tongued butler and detective in his upcoming drama, it was revealed on August 18, reports Asahi Shimbun and Chunichi Sports.

Sakurai, along with actress Keiko Kitagawa, will play the star roles in a TV drama adaptation of popular mystery novel “謎解きはディナーのあとで (Nazotoki wa Dinner no atode)”.  The story follows Reiko Housho (Kitagawa), the only daughter in a family running one of the largest companies in the world.  Reiko hides her true identity to become a police detective, but finds she is not very good at her new job.  Back home after work, Reiko rants on about the cases she is trying to solve to her butler and chauffeur Kageyama (Sakurai).  The butler does not hesitate in giving Reiko his honest opinion, saying things like, “miss, what on earth are you looking at” or “miss, are you stupid,” and solves the case for her on the spot.

It has been reported in the drama, some elements will be added to the story, such as getting Kageyama to visit Reiko at crime scenes in secret to make sure she does not get hurt.

The two have released comments about how they felt about working on the new drama.

“By coincidence, a friend of mine had recommended this book to me before.  The story kept me on my toes, I kept turning the pages.  I do think the drama will have a little more humour put into it.  I hope I can make this a drama that will get people itching for Tuesday night to come along every week,” Sakurai said.

“I hope we can portray the humour between Kageyama and Reiko.  It’s my first time playing such a character who’s part heiress, part police detective, so I hope I can show a new side to me,” Kitagawa said.

Fuji TV producers have said they chose Sakurai because the Arashi star comes across as a responsible, gentleman-like, but also possesses a comical and warm quality.

“謎解きはディナーのあとで (Nazotoki wa Dinner no atode)” will go on air in Japan from October.
