SMAP’s Shingo Katori, actress Ryoko Hirosue, and a dog will bring a popular TV variety series to the big screen, it was revealed on November 29, reports Oricon and Chunichi Sports.

The movie “LOVE まさお君が行く! (LOVE Masao-kun ga iku!)” will feature a cute but slightly dumb labrador retriever called Masao-kun, who goes on a journey around Japan with unpopular comedian Matsumoto, played by Katori.  The two begin to understand one another and grow as a person or dog, while Matsumoto’s girlfriend, played by Hirosue, watches over the two.  The film is based on the variety series “まさお君が行く! (Masao-kun ga iku!)” on the TV Tokyo show “ペット大集合!ポチたま (Pet Dai-shugo! Pochi-tama)”, which ran from 2000 to 2010.

Katori’s canine co-star, six-year-old Love, beat 200 other hopeful dogs.  According to producers, Love had caught their attention because he had a naturally cute but slightly dumb manner.  During the press conference yesterday in Tokyo, it has been reported Love continuously wagged his tail and even jumped at the press.

“He’s already peed on me twice.  Both when the camera wasn’t rolling.

“When an actress comes in he always rolls on his back in front of them.  He hasn’t done that to me once…,” Katori said.

Katori also talked about how he gets into character to play a comedian who can not get jobs.

“I try not to pay attention to things around me.  I’ll listen to things that don’t matter while we’re on location, and sometimes I’ll walk ahead of Masao when we’re really supposed to be traveling together.

“I’ve worked with a lot of comedians so I’ve been trying to think of how this person and that person act…there are at least three people I keep referencing back to,” he said.

Filming had begun on October 23, and has been going around Tokyo and the countryside.

“Even when things go wrong, the camera keeps rolling, but it’s because of that that we have a lot of fun on set too,” he said.

“LOVE まさお君が行く! (LOVE Masao-kun ga iku!)” is set to be released on June 23 2012.
