Kanjani8’s Ryuhei Maruyama and his drama co-stars started punching sand bags in front of the press on June 28 to see which of them was a better boxer, reports Daily Sports Online and Walker plus news.
Maruyama plays a virgin learning to box in his upcoming drama series “Boys On The Run“, which is based on the manga series of the same name. Other cast members include KAT-TUN’s Tatsuya Ueda, Akina Minami, Eriko Sato, and Takanori Jinnai.
“We’re working on a drama during a particularly tough time (with the Olympics starting in July), but I think this story is just as entertaining. I just watched through the first episode and it’s like watching something that has so many things packed into it. Try watching even the first episode please,” Maruyama said.
It has been reported during their promotional press conference in Tokyo on Thursday, a punching machine was brought out to see how good the actors were at boxing. Special guest and former WBC bantamweight boxing champion Yasuei Yakushiji set the first record, throwing 195 punches in 30 seconds. KAT-TUN’s Ueda scored 172 punches, while Maruyama scored 269 punches.
“I’m sorry, while watching you guys I got an idea about what works best,” he said.
Another question thrown at the cast was about which actress they found most attractive.
“I’d choose Shiho-san (played by Sato). She has a kind of older-woman seductiveness, she’s open-minded. She’s the best female character who says the right thing and it sticks in your mind, so I think that makes her a very amazing lady,” Maruyama said.
“The one lady who I can really trust as a trainer is Hana-san (played by Airi Taira), but then the ladies next to me (Minami and Sato) are really pretty too… They’re all too beautiful that I couldn’t choose,” Ueda said.
“What are you, some pure-hearted teen idol!” Maruyama said in response to Ueda’s comment.
“Boys On The Run” begins on July 6.
The drama is set in a police boarding school. The place is full of loser students, but every week they grow stronger and grow as people. It is Fujigaya’s first go at a drama series lead role.
“[My character is] stupid and lame, but there’s a lot of coming-of-age drama and ambition in it,” Fujigaya said.
It has been reported one of the police instructor characters gives Fujigaya’s character a hard time, and there is a scene where Fujigaya gets slapped in the face for causing trouble.
“I think my parents are going to be surprised when they see it,” he said.
But the Johnny’s talent said it was also something funny to watch.
“I get beaten up every time so I hope the fans enjoy looking out for it,” he said.
Fujigaya’s co-stars also include his fellow Kis-My-Ft2 member Hiromitsu Kitayama and actress Ayame Gouriki.
“A lot of the cast are the same age so it was easy to become a team,” Fujigaya said.
It has been reported during the press conference, a cake was brought out to celebrate Fujigaya’s 25th birthday, which was on June 25.
“Beginners” goes on air from July 12.
Arashi, this year’s main personalities for the charity special 24Hr TV, talked about what to expect this year during a press conference in Tokyo on June 26, reports Chunichi Sports, Sports Hochi, and Daily Sports Online.
The five of them will be joined by actress and charity personality Yui Aragaki, and TV announcers Shinichi Hatori and Nana Suzue for this year’s “２４時間テレビ３５『愛は地球を救う』(24Hr Television / Love Saves the Earth’)“.
It has been reported the theme this year is “未来 (Future)”, which members said the group will make most worthwhile.
“We, Arashi have been fortunate to take part in the 2004 and 2008 Olympic year shows. We’re very happy to have been asked to join the show once more this year. I hope we can make it a hot summer which will lead to a ‘future’ just as much as the Olympics and Paraolympics do,” Sho Sakurai said.
“‘伝える (give a message)’, ‘作る (create)’, and ‘つないでいく (pass down)’. I hope we can all help one another to create a variety of futures,” Kazunari Ninomiya said.
Arashi leader Satoshi Ohno worked with Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara to design this year’s T-shirt.
“We decided on this design after three meetings … Nara-san’s from Aomori so it depicts an apple* ,” he said.
It has been reported when reporters asked Ohno about his short haircut, he said it was all part of his plan.
“This is a challenge. I’ve never been on 24Hr TV in the past with a new short haircut.”
Actress Aragaki also said she would depend on Arashi for help.
“I feel really nervous standing next to these national pop stars. I’ll be counting on you.”
“２４時間テレビ３５『愛は地球を救う』(24Hr Television / Love Saves the Earth’)” will go on air in Japan on August 25.
* Aomori is an area in northern Japan famous for apples.
* I’d meant to do this last week, but since tonight is Ohno’s drama’s last episode, I thought it appropriate to do a short story about him! Momo.
Arashi leader Satoshi Ohno was a handful to look after as a kid, it was revealed during the Waku Waku Gakkou event in Tokyo, reports Josei Seven.
We know Ohno had grown up with his parents and older sister, but what many people did not know was when he was 3 or 4 years-old, his mother warned him to keep away from freshly-cut canned tin lid.
“Yes,” he said before touching it anyway. It has been reported Ohno got five stitches to his injured hand.
Then, when Ohno was 5, an even bigger accident happened. While riding on the back of his dad’s bicycle, Mr Ohno would say, “Satoshi, don’t fall asleep. Keep your legs open!”
What happened next was the young Ohno fell asleep, got his leg caught in the bicycle wheel, and needed 15 stitches.
It has been reported Ohno found himself in so many accidents, the hospital doctor would say, “you again?” when he saw the young Johnny’s talent.
Yesterday, I got a request to translate a story on Jin Akanishi (thank you @wj0704 for sending me the link!).
I’ve been reading a few lately so thought it would be an idea to translate the requested story and a few others.
WARNING: All of these are rumors and I can’t guarantee that any of them are true.
Jin Akanishi might be making a come back in Kazuya Kamenashi’s upcoming movie “妖怪人間ベム (Yokai Ningen Bem)”, reports Tokyo Sports.
It has been reported Akanishi would be making a guest appearance in the movie playing a monster.
“I’ve heard that he’ll be playing Kamenashi’s enemy, a retired pop star coming back from the US who turned into a monster because he didn’t make it in showbiz. They’re waiting for a response from Akanishi now,” said one source.
Surprisingly though, it was Kamenashi’s idea to offer Akanishi the part.
“During their KAT-TUN years they would be constantly arguing. If something came up, the two of them would begin arguing, but they recognized the other as their own rival. I heard that when Akanishi and Kuroki got married, Kamenashi sent him an email congratulating them. But then Akanishi got all of his jobs taken away from him, and then his fan club was closed down, so I guess Kamenashi couldn’t sit still and watch Akanishi go through this,” said the same source as above.
Filming for “妖怪人間ベム (Yokai Ningen Bem)” will take place in July and August in both a studio in Tokyo and on location in Hokkaido.
We will have to wait and see whether Akanishi takes this offer or not.
Rumours going around suggest Jin Akanishi might be switching agencies, reports Tokyo Sports.
“Kuroki’s agency is apparently going to launch a male actor’s department and the word on the street is that Akanishi might be switching to it. Filming for his Hollywood movie ’47RONIN’ has finished, and it’s due to come out in December* so he’ll probably stay in Johnny’s for the remainder of the year. But he’s thinking positively about switching agencies for the sake of his baby. However, apparently Kuroki’s agency would have to pay a huge breakup fee to Johnny’s in order to get Akanishi,” said one source.
* update: as of June 20, 47RONIN has been re-scheduled to be released in February 2013.
Jin Akanishi wants to live in Kuroki’s hometown Okinawa and open a bar, reports Cyzowoman.
Akanishi and actress Meisa Kuroki announced their marriage in February, and in April Kuroki finally announced she was four months pregnant. Although the baby is due in October, Kuroki already has work lined up afterwards, recently getting a role in next year’s NHK Taiga drama “八重の桜 (Yae no Sakura)”. Akanishi’s schedule however, still remains blank.
“As a penalty for his shotgun wedding, his concert tour was cancelled, his fan club closed down, and his summer drama role in ‘GTO’ was turned down. Although his Hollywood movie ’47RONIN’ starring Keanu Reeves will be released next year, it’s undecided whether he’ll take part in promoting the film. At this rate he might end up becoming a house-husband,” said one source.
It has been reported in the May 29th edition of “Shukan Josei” magazine, Akanishi’s clubbing nights with Johnny’s talents Tomohisa Yamashita and Ryo Nishikido have also stopped. Akanishi has instead been spending time with Kuroki and going on dates during the day, Yamashita has been focussing on his solo career, and Nishikido has been busy shooting his drama series “パパドル! (Papa-dol!)” and going to driving school in his free time to get his motorcycle license.
It has been reported Akanishi has talked to those around him about some things he would like to do in the future.
“Before getting married to Kuroki, he went to her hometown in Okinawa a number of times and has been able to open up to Kuroki’s relatives now. With the US base there, he’s enjoying the fact that he can use his English there, and he’s been telling people he’d like to open a bar in Okinawa which can also host live band performances. Although that might be good for Akanishi, it would mean that Kuroki would have to fly out to Tokyo every time she has work, or they might even have to live in separate cities,” said one source.
Nonetheless, it is important for Akanishi to find some sort of work or it could create tension in his marriage. Having given up so many things for this marriage, let’s hope that the two remain happy.
NEWS member Yuya Tegoshi loves his friends but also sees them as his biggest rivals, reports Yomiuri Shimbun on June 19.
“I started playing soccer when I was at kindergarten and loved it, even now it’s a part of my life.
I practice with my team as captain, and we enter competitions. No matter how busy I am at work, I have to move my body. I love playing and being with my friends. It gets me ready for the next day.
I constantly train my body. Even if we have two concerts in one day, I can cool down properly and don’t get tired the next day. Compared to soccer, singing and dancing at the same time is a piece of cake.
Soccer has made me an incredibly competitive person. I made my debut with NEWS at fifteen, I was the youngest member in the group and had only joined Johnny’s 10 months before. I had no dance experience. I was literally the worst in the group and it really annoyed me.
Up to then I was always a leader. The anchor in the relay team, the captain of the cheering squad, the team leader in school trips. So for the first time I felt out of place, and I didn’t like going to work.
That competitiveness in me started coming out. I’d take dance lessons in secret. I wanted to be a better singer so I hired a voice trainer and practiced the songs over and over again at karaoke.
The NEWS members are my friends, but they’re also my biggest rivals. I want to be the best that I can. I feel a lot of gratitude towards soccer for teaching me to push myself further.”
This is a mashup of several fan reports I found while surfing the web.
Fan Reports: Arashi’s Waku Waku Gakkou
Evening session, 17 June 2012
360 degree screen, circular stage in centre set up like a class room with one podium and four desks (one Arashi member as teacher and the other four as students)
Before the opening
A message came up on the screen from all Waku Waku Gakkou teachers other than Ninomiya Sensei saying they want to throw a surprise party for him so please refrain from wishing Ninomiya a happy birthday until they say so.
The opening video showed the five members doing their own thing, and then after seeing the Arashi school seal would transform into their white lab coat outfits.
- Jun Matsumoto: Running on a treadmill in the gym and sees the school seal on a T-shirt on a guy in the same room
- Masaki Aiba: At a shoot for his drama “Mike-neko no Holmes”, opens up his lunch box and sees the school seal
- Sho Sakurai: Giving the weather report during News Zero and sees the school seal as he points to the screen
- Kazunari Ninomiya: Inside a bus playing on his Nintendo DS when a message flashes on the screen to look outside, he sees the school seal on a building’s TV monitor
- Satoshi Ohno: While reading through his script for the drama “Kagi no Kakatta Heya”, pours some sugar into his cafe au lait, and the coffee art turns into the school seal
After the transformation, the five appear from the staff room and onto the Tokyo Dome stage.
Ninomiya Sensei’s Kachi Kachi class
- Who dunnit game. Try and find out who broke the vase in the classroom
- Getting Ohno to open the lid of a bottle (he can’t because it’s a trick lid that has to be twisted in reverse to normal lids)
- Showing how confusing it is if someone reverses the colour of men’s and women’s toilet signs (blue woman sign and red man sign)
- The door with a doorknob, but it’s a sliding door
- Relay. Matsumoto -> Sakurai -> Aiba -> Ohno ran a relay. Towards the end Nino jumped towards the goal post and started fiddling around. But Ohno managed to run through the goal without any problems. Apparently Nino had tampered with the finish line and at a switch of a button the goal posts were supposed to move further away from Ohno, making him run more.
Aiba Sensei’s Paku Paku class
- Three Arashi members keep their eyes open when Aiba changes into a sushi chef
- Video of Aiba in a fish costume
- Q&A session (the student with the correct answer gets the sushi Aiba is making at the time)
Q: What part is shrimp miso and crab miso? This one went to Ohno who said it’s the liver. Aiba tries to make sushi but gets rice all over his hands so he starts licking it off, which puts off the others. When Ohno finally gets his sushi he bites on a big bit of wasabi, holds his nose and stopped moving.
- Members eat fried clams. Everyone compliments Aiba that the food tastes good, and he says, “I love you guys”.
Sakurai Sensei’s Goku Goku class
- Sakurai gives everyone a bottle of water to drink
- Video about recycling water (apparently Tokyo Dome toilets use rain water)
- Experiment to see how much water a person can use when taking a shower. Arashi members collect buckets of water from pools set up around Tokyo Dome, and use it to wash a mannequin dressed up as a member. One bucket = One Arashi. In this session, the Aiba mannequin used up 12 Arashi, in June 17’s first session the Ohno mannequin used 13 Arashi (he said he doesn’t use conditioner), and in June 16’s session the Matsumoto mannequin used 18 Arashi.
Matsumoto’s Somo Somo class
- Goes around families sitting in the audience asking them for stories about when they were born or the meaning behind their names
- Video about birth
- Now the members give the audience a sign, and everyone shouts, “Happy Birthday Nino!”
Nino’s birthday section
A birthday cake appeared in both the morning and evening sessions of June 17. After everyone sang Happy Birthday, Nino would blow out the candles.
Apparently in the evening session, the cake was decorated in strawberries and umeboshi sour plums. Matsumoto had said it was because Nino’s mum always gives sour plums to Arashi when they have a concert so his image of Nino’s mum is sour plums.
“In the script it said that when Nino eats his cake and says, ‘why is it sour?’ then Matsujun would say, ‘because this cake has sour plums on it’. But how can he not spot the sour plums,” Sakurai said.
Nino’s birthday comment:
“Thank you so much for celebrating my 29th…not that anything has really changed, but I’m enjoying every day. Now I think it might be an idea to dye my hair blond from time to time whether I’m 30 or 40 or 50.”
Matsumoto had said he heard from Nino’s mother that he was a baby who grew so much inside of her, that no matter how much she tried, he just did not want to come out. She said when he was born he weighed 3900g, or roughly the same as a one month old baby.
Matsumoto: When I asked her why she called you “Kazunari”, she said, “we were fussy about the (kanji) stroke count, and decided we wanted him to become a friendly person, treasuring the 和(wa, harmony) of those around him”. Not only that, but she also spilled on the other name they were thinking for Nino. “大 (Hiroshi)”.
Nino mum’s letter
Ninomiya’s mother wrote a letter for Nino which was read out, but because she knew there were two sessions on his birthday, she wrote two letters.
I couldn’t find a fan who managed to write everything down word for word, but you can get an idea!
These are bits from the morning session:
“Happy Birthday Kazu.
When you were born you weighed 3900g, your neck wouldn’t strengthen as quickly as it should have, you got an infected ear, an ambulance came when you got heat cramps, you got the mumps, the doctor said there was something wrong with your heart, then there was massaging you every time there was a nappy change to get you over from hydrocele testis.
You didn’t like extra-curricular classes. (You cried when going to Kumon, pretended to sleep when it was time to go to piano lessons. But baseball went on for a while)
A lot of people have looked after you over the years. Never forget what it means to be thankful.
Whenever you come home to eat my monja dish, you always say thank you before leaving.
Thank you for coming into my life.
These are bits from the evening session:
“Happy Birthday Kazu.
I remember when you joined Johnny’s when you were at junior high, and when you were bullied as a child in early primary school and walked to school at a different time from the crowd.
When there was bullying going on in your fifth grade class, your teacher told me that you weren’t involved and that you treated the student getting bullied like a normal person.
I also heard that when your friends invited you to peak into the girl’s changing room with them, you said you didn’t want to. I was happy because it takes real courage to stand up to your friends.
I remember when your friends would come over to the house and you would make takoyaki, how you’d be playing video games a lot, and how the adults in the neighborhood would call you a charmer because you always took your hat off when saying hello to them in the street. Everyone loves seeing you work Kazu, and you always make me smile when I come to your concerts. I am your biggest fan.
After reading the letter, the other members asked him whether he remembered saying no to his friends when they dared him to peak into the girls changing room.
“When I was a senior at primary school, the girls changing rooms were on the top floors so I think I was just too lazy to go all that way,” Nino said.
Ohno Sensei’s Gera Gera class
- Gera Gera championship. See who could laugh the best.
- Gera Gera laser. This is the section that got a lot of TV coverage on wide shows. Ohno doing the gera gera dance and song. To see a clip from the news, click here.
